Village Wine: Beares the name of specific village. ($=good)

Premier Cru: From a specific vineyard with special characteristics, within one of the named villages.  Usually a Premier Cru wine will list on the label the village first and the vineyard second. ($$=better)

Grand Cru: From a specific vineyard that possesses the best soil and slope in the area and meets or exceeds all other requirements.  In most ares of Burgundy,  the village doesn't appear on the label - only the Grand Cru vineyead name is used. ($$$$=best)

If it's any comfort to you, you need to know only one white grape variety: Chardonnay.  All the great white Burgundies are made from 100 percent Chardonnay.
